Welcome to Knights of the Deep, an armored combat league committed to preserving the discipline, courage, and spectacle of full-contact medieval fighting. Our athletes compete in carefully crafted, historically inspired armor, training rigorously to bring authentic—yet safe—combat to life. We travel around the United States to host tournaments, exhibitions, and regional melees that celebrate the sport and the community around it.

Michael Clarke
A military veteran with over three years of experience in Buhurt, he stands 6'2" and 350 lbs in 15th-century Milanese armor, thriving in the 1 Rail position. Skilled with grappler, tank mace, buckler, and a 32" two-handed axe, he’s driven by the challenge of armored combat and the goal of representing Team USA

Gunnar Averhart
With nearly a year of experience in armored combat and a background in martial arts, he thrives on the strategy and chaos of the fight, sharpening his skills with every battle he takes on. His approach combines discipline with adaptability as he continues to grow within the sport. Standing 6’3”, he competes in the 2 position, wielding a two-handed axe. His armor kit is currently to be determined.

Jacob Wood
With one year of fighting experience, this Gonzaga University alumnus brings a strong athletic foundation from swimming and personal training into armored combat. His focus is on continued growth, with the goal of competing internationally against fighters from around the world. Standing 6’5” and weighing 320 lbs in armor, he competes in Armor 1 or 2 rail positions, wielding a long mace and buckler. His kit is based on early 15th-century transitional armor.

Lee Savage
One of the founding members of the Knights of the Deep, he brings over two years of experience in the sport of Buhurt and more than a decade of martial arts training to the list. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt with 11+ years of training, his background also includes hapkido, tae kwon do, and tang soo do. His goal is to represent Team USA and compete in international tournaments around the world. Standing 5’11” and weighing 240 lbs in armor, he fights in the floating rail position as a grappler, wielding an axe and buckler. His kit is based on 15th-century Western armor.

Doug Byler
Approaching one year of experience in the sport, he brings both passion and approachability to the Knights of the Deep. By trade, he works as a network and IT handyman, but his lifelong desire to fight with steel weapons led him to Buhurt, where that goal became a reality. Dedicated to growing the sport, he enjoys engaging with spectators and is always happy to answer questions from the audience. Standing 5’11” and weighing 300 lbs in armor, he competes as a runner and grappler, wielding an axe and buckler as well as a 32-inch two-handed axe. His kit is inspired by 15th-century Milanese armor (TBD).

Wyatt Lux
With less than a year of experience in the sport, he brings grit and enthusiasm to the Knights of the Deep. A farm-raised fighter from central Idaho, he thrives on the raw energy of a renaissance fair brawl while setting his sights on earning a competitive role with the team. His passion for armored combat is driven by hard work, determination, and a love for the sport’s atmosphere. Standing 5’11” and weighing 320 lbs in armor, he competes in the Armor 1 rail position, wielding a one-handed axe. His kit features BuhurtTech Squire armor paired with a Wolfrib helm.
